Serengeti national park

Mkomazi National Park, spanning an impressive 3,245 square kilometers in northern Tanzania, stands as a captivating destination. Established in 1951, it initially struggled to garner financial support compared to renowned wildlife strongholds like the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park. It wasn’t until 1989, when the Tanzanian Government re-evaluated its status, designating it a National Priority Project, that its true significance gained recognition.

The name “Mkomazi” originates from the Pare ethnic language, combining “Mko,” representing a traditional tiny wooden spoon used by the Pare people, and “Mazi,” meaning water. This reflects the scarcity of water in the park, symbolized by the minimal amount it would take to fill the wooden spoon.

Mkomazi National Park boasts breathtaking wilderness, with Mount Kilimanjaro visible to the northwest and the Pare and Usambara Mountains creating a striking backdrop to the south. To the north, it shares a border with Kenya’s expansive Tsavo National Park, providing a shared habitat for migratory herds of elephant, oryx, and zebra during the wet season. Together with Tsavo, it forms one of the planet’s largest and most crucial protected ecosystems.

The park is home to a Rhino sanctuary, currently owned by Tanapa and open to the public. Visitors can arrange guided visits to explore this remarkable conservation effort.
