Ruaha National Park, nestled in the Eastern Rift Valley, was established in 1964 and spans an elevation ranging from 2,500 to 5,200 feet (750 to 1,900 m). Covering an expansive 5,000 square miles (12,950 square km), it was originally part of the Rungwa Game Reserve.
The park is characterized by rolling plains east of the Great Ruaha River, from which it derives its name. The diverse vegetation includes clumps of palms, open grassland, scattered baobab trees, and scrubby woodland in the north. This creates a stunning backdrop for wildlife enthusiasts.
Wildlife thrives in this natural haven, with sightings of lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, zebra, kudu, bushbuck, buffalo, roan and sable antelope, and hartebeest. The rivers within the park are home to crocodiles and hippos, adding to the richness of the biodiversity.
Ruaha National Park boasts several ‘sand’ rivers, serving as vital wildlife corridors during the dry season. These rivers, though mostly dry at times, play a crucial role in connecting areas where water remains, offering a unique and beautiful landscape.
Nature enthusiasts may be fortunate enough to spot elusive creatures such as the rare striped hyena or the critically endangered African wild dog, of which only around 100 remain in the park.

Best time to visit Ruaha National Park
For an unforgettable wildlife experience at Ruaha National Park, plan your visit during the dry season spanning from June to October. This period offers exceptional opportunities for prime wildlife viewing as the vegetation thins out, and animals congregate around the remaining water sources.
Conversely, the wet season from November to April presents a unique charm, with lush green foliage and an influx of migrant birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Keep in mind that April and May witness the heaviest rains, leading to impassable roads and closures of many lodges. Hence, these months are not recommended for visiting the park.
